Information On Campus Crisis Planning

By Nancy Murray

It is a fact that life can never be the same daily in our campuses. There will be times where the disaster like floods, fire outbreaks or even student fights and attacks will be facing the institution. This forces the management and the administration to come up with working campus crisis planning strategy that can be used during such moments so that the effects become minimal. The absence of one means more casualties.

In the event of such ordeals, the management, and the administrators usually, find themselves in the hot seats demanded to come up with frameworks that should be applied. However, if such a plan already exists, things may be less stressing as each person will know their role. More so, there will be knowledge of what tools should be used.

It is true that laying down of such a plan is very demanding. It calls for brilliant individuals who have the experience to come up with these schemes. A competent one will ensure that any plan has five basic steps which are comprehensive. The first step is establishing a team which will be tasked with the role of analyzing all crises that may occur so that people know what is to happen.

The second step is still establishing another team, but this one has another more vital role. They may be the individuals who are going to respond to any crisis that will have occurred. Since their duty is very sensitive and demanding, they should have a well-organized structure knowing who is the team leader and have a guideline of how to work.

Additionally, there should be the investigation stage. Here is where there is the process of investigating the disaster and its [potential causes. It requires having a leader who may be initiating and regulating the scope of the investigation. Additionally, there must be some individuals within the institution who need to be contacted since they have knowledge about a particular occurrence.

Most people end up being victims of a disaster because of panic and fear which compromises their thinking. It is thus important that there should be a crisis training done. This must be done periodically and ensure that it covers all the scopes of potential happenings. It helps the people to know what to do especially since its at a disastrous moment where things may not be going so very well.

Lastly, we have communication. Effective communication during such times is very crucial as it is a determining factor that will establish how well the disaster is put into control. There should well-defined channels of communication within the emergency responding team and the also the potential victims within the institution. Aside from that, there must be a spokesperson who will be briefing the media, investors and even government officials concerning the steps were taken.

Disasters are events that no one can ever welcome them. Sadly, these events seem always to look for ways to our lives. It is not possible to say that your institution is disaster free. Have well-laid strategies to deal with them is, however, a good way of being shielded from its effect. Through these plans, many lives can be saved.
