The same thing is practiced by organizations that serve the public like universities, malls, and banks which have staff members wearing badges at the expense of uniforms. A badge may also be used by organizations for distinguishing visitors and guests from the rest of the staff.

The origin of badges is believed to have been the laundry industry where they were used in identification of owners of laundry brought for washing. The military adopted it in the world war two. All combat uniforms and clothes in the military normally have badges bearing one name of the person wearing it. The name is usually the surname.
