The diet is simply consists of some food that are low in fibre. This is essential as it is found that foods with high fibre content increases the stool in individuals and people that are dealing with such problems need to reduce the fibre content in order to treat their upset stomach. High fibre foods are known to make the gastrointestinal problems worse.

If you are dealing with such bowel movement problems, then having the brat diet should be your first preference. You must add bananas, rice and applesauce and toast to your diet and live on this diet till you are able to heal your diarrhoea. This is something that of course not every individual is capable of. However, if you are aware of how your digestive system functions, then you can enjoy any food that you want and you might not have to deal with any symptoms or effects of problems like diarrhoea, constipation or other conditions related to bad bowel movement.

You will also need to change your eating habit as well; this is a step by step process that you will need to follow. It is very often found that people look to change their diet instantly the next day and very often fail to do so. Changing to a healthy diet simply means that you will have to make small and certain changes that do not significantly differ from one another but alters a little.

The last ingredient for a basic BRAT diet is the TOAST, you can add a few slices of toast, with a bit of apple jelly, and it shall add to your calories for the patient. If you opt for alternative brat diets, you add tea to you diet, this shall support hydration. Also add yogurt, which provides good bacteria that get depleted during bouts of diarrhoea and vomiting as well.

Rehydration plays a very important role in dealing with bowel dysfunction. It is recommended to drink at least 8 glasses of water daily on a constant basis, exclusively for the people dealing with diarrhoea or similar problems. You must avoid carbonated beverages or drinks as it might lead to gas problems and might even cause discomfort. Make sure you drink a lot of water, to ensure your body gets filled with water, as this might prevent constipation.

You must develop healthy eating habits, similar to the things that you have learned doing in your life. Food must never be considered as anything that can be picked up from the store and eaten. Developing a health habit begins by choosing valuable foods that adds up to a balanced diet.

In the current times, the brat diet is not generally recommended, instead it is advised that the child stays on a normal diet and the BRAT diet is prescribed along with their normal tolerated foods. Moreover, studies suggest that a normal balanced diet should be maintained when suffering from diarrhoea and by adding brat foods to the diet can help you to prevent it from getting more severe. However, it is also recommended that if you are dealing with severe diarrhoea, even after following the brat diet, then you must refer to a physician or a doctor.
