The Benefits Of Ornamental And Liriope Grass

By Nancy Mitchell

Of the many types of decorative plants that can be used to add color and beauty to a yard or outdoor area, liriope is one of the most popular. The qualities of this plant genus include the fact that it grows low to the ground, it looks similar to common types of grasses, and it also flowers. The genus is known to have originated in different parts of South and Southeast Asia and is the ideal pick for many people who are looking for ornamental and liriope grass.

The name of this genus of plants comes from Greek mythology, after a particular nymph from the central part of Greece according to legend. It is not specified in the ancient writings, but this nymph, or spirit of nature in the form of a beautiful woman, was born of one of the Gods of the river. This is the fairy who gave birth to Narcissus, a god who was so vain he fell in love with his own image. It is likely that the name of the plant came from its beautiful nature and possibly the climate it grows in.

There are many different ways that people pronounce the name liriope, but most people who know their plants will be able to understand what it is no matter how it is said. A lot of people like to call it lilyturf because of the flowers that bloom on the plant, but they are technically not in the same family as lilies or grasses. Monkey or spider grass are two other common names for it.

People who have these plants can expect them to flower around the end of summertime. This is an excellent thing to look forward to as the sweltering hot months come to a close and the chill of autumn starts to creep in. The colors of the flowers are often blue and violet, but there are many more varieties that have been engineered now with the flashiest golds and silvers imaginable.

It is not hard to find a big selection of these types of grasses at most stores and nurseries, or even by shopping online. Since the demand has grown, most people have them in stock and are ready to provide whatever the customer is looking for. Ornamentals are considered any grasses or similar plants that are planted because of their decorative value.

It can be very hard to keep plants alive in a garden or yard when the weather is just too cold to support most types of plant life. That is why people who live in these types of climates are very enticed when they hear that ornamentals are among the hardier of plants like this. They can survive the cold seasons and even in regions that stay cold all the time.

Not all of the plants that fall into this category are necessarily grasses. Some have been given this name simply because they are similar to most grasses. Sedges, rushes, and cat-tails are all examples of these.

Most plants in this category are perennial. This means that they are dormant in the fall and winter. There are also a few that are annuals, meaning the plant's life cycle is completed in a year.
