A Short Summary Of What Transpired During The Greek Persian Wars

By Brenda Moore

Human history toward a civilized world tells the best war stories. These have been documented everywhere since the dawn of mankind. From the drawings on cave walls to a systematized way of writing. One of the more famous literary works that record these events from time in memorial are the different scriptures. These books are not only for spiritual nourishment, but more importantly they give a good picture of historical events.

Wars are prevalent in the ancient world since fighting for territory is one way to know who has always been more powerful. Mankind has always had the tendency of greed for power. This too has been documented in so many ancient literary works. One of the greatest wars fought was the Greek Persian Wars. All of it starting with the Persians invading Ionia, a state in Greece.

The battle between Persia and Greece was no less than epic. The Persians started conquering Greek City States when Anatolia, one of the places they tried to conquer rebelled and tried to fight back. The Greeks were defeated and their revolt did not succeed. The act itself though, was able to launch Athens and Eretria to send their own fleet.

One notable thing about Persia as a military force is how they focus more on numbers. This does not mean they necessarily won those battles. During an encounter in Plataea Greece had to face Persia and only suffered 192 losses over the 6,400 from the larger army.

After the loss, Persia decides to return 10 years later and this time was lead by Xerxes, the successor of Cyrus the Great. This started a string of defeats for the Persian army since there might have been ample time for the Greeks to prepare. This was such a notable part of history that there was a movie made to tell the story.

You can tell that Persia was not invested in the tactical methods of war. When they were heading to one of the battles their soldiers suffered from losses while they advanced slowly. Greece at the time handed the command for the army to Sparta.

There was a seaside battle that occurred that was meant to surprise the Greek fleet. This did not work since Greece was alerted about the attack. As counter measure they went after the head Persian fleet. The weather was also on their side, since they already knew that a storm was coming so they went to shore. This was not something the Persians knew about so they ended up losing a squadron in the storm.

Here is the plot twist. There was a Greek traitor that guided the opposing troops around to pass behind the soldiers of Greece. This was after the battle of Thermopylae that transpired for two days. While the Persian forces had the advantage of important information, Greece had the great Spartan general, Leonidas. They fought to the death after the general has sent most soldiers to the south for safety.

Even when there was a great battle happening between Greece and Persia, the latter was already able to influence some parts. The people from Northern Greece joined Xerxes to attack their motherlands fleet. This resulted to the incineration of Athens. Athenians remained safe since they were evacuated before any of the burning happened.
