Fun Teaching Ideas For Today's Classroom

By Robert Thomas

It is through education that people garner many of the skills and knowledge that is required to allow them to function in society. It goes without saying, therefore, that education is a crucial part of every individual's life. Teaching and learning can be boring sometimes though. This is why educators in the traditional and non-traditional school systems always search for fun teaching ideas that will benefit their students by making lessons more engaging and effective.

One fun way to learn is by using puzzles. These may come in the form of a crossword, find a word, cryptograms or even jigsaw puzzles. By using these puzzles, teachers achieve multiple aims. They get to ensure that students remember the concepts that were explored in the lesson and build problem-solving skills at the same time.

Games and simulations are another great alternatives for bringing fun into the traditional and non-traditional classroom. Through games, teachers get to achieve multiple goals. They get to ensure that knowledge is passed on in a meaningful and practical way while helping their students to build their interpersonal skills. The interpersonal skills are built when students work in teams to participate in the gaming or simulation activity.

Field Trips also help to convert a boring lesson into one that is full of intrigue. Students and teachers who operate in the same traditional classroom environment on a daily basis usually look forward to a change in environment. Trips to the museum or zoo are usually very exciting for students and they allow for practical learning experiences. Field trips can be simpler though as teachers may take students on nature walks within the school environment or they may take them outside for observation purposes. These are typically called mini-field trips.

Experiments and projects are great ways to teach while keeping students entertained. Geography students, for example, usually enjoy making their own volcano models and demonstrating the eruptions. This approach usually appeals to the tactile learner who learns best by doing. Students also develop a sense of pride and accomplishment as they can see the product of their efforts.

The use of a resource person is a time-tested teaching method that has brought interest to classrooms for decades. It remains a relevant teaching tool today. Students' interests are piqued when a new person is brought into the classroom environment. If this person has a fun character, then it makes the experience even more exciting.

The modern age of technology has brought with it a plethora of methods for enhancing the learning environment. Not only does it create a platform through which games puzzles and simulations may be accessed by students and teachers but it also provides access to other fun methods of teaching and learning. One such method is through access to varying forms of media such as videos. Animated videos, in particular, are known for their appeal to the younger students. Virtual classrooms are also available on some platforms and can be used to ensure that today's learner who is technology savvy, remains engaged.

Websites have been developed for the purpose of engaging students meaningfully while enhancing learning. Through these websites teachers and students have access to digital tools that aid learning. These tools include software that facilitates learning games, videos, and virtual classroom platforms. Some websites are developed specifically for teachers. From these websites, educators can access creative ideas and tools for teaching. The sharing of best practices and creative ideas by educators is sometimes facilitated by these websites. This allows for the spreading of innovative ways to teach.
